The Ridge Turnpike Road Company was chartered to build a turnpike from Philadelphia northwest to the Perkiomen Bridge in Collegeville via Norristown. US 422 switched alignments with US 422 Alt. east of Barren Hill in the 1950s; this resulted in US 422 again being designated along Ridge Pike and Ridge Avenue between Barren Hill and Philadelphia. In the 1960s, US 422 was realigned off Ridge Pike to follow Germantown Pike from Collegeville east to Philadelphia while US 422 Alt. was decommissioned, leaving Ridge Pike and Ridge Avenue unnumbered between Collegeville and Philadelphia.
